COCKER SPANIELS
The American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel are recognized as two separate breeds.
In the US, the American Cocker Spaniel is typically referred to as simply the Cocker Spaniel. Yet in other parts of the world where the English Cocker Spaniel is more popular it is referred to as the American Cocker Spaniel.
But make no mistake about it, these are two separate breeds.
The physical differences between the two breeds are most evident in the head and back. The back of the English Cocker Spaniel is shorter than that of the American Cocker Spaniel and the head is considerably more round that that of the American Cocker Spaniel. One other notable difference is in the behavior of these breeds. The American Cocker Spaniel has not retained its hunting instinct and is content to be a companion animal. The English Cocker Spaniel, on the other hand, requires a bit more physical activity to satisfy its hunting urge and not become bored or frustrated. But it too is quite happy to be a companion animal to its people.
