There are well over 800 breeds of dogs, not including hybrids, designer breeds, cross breeds and mixed breeds, that have been recognized by the various kennel clubs. It is, however, difficult to determine exactly how many unique breeds really exist.
The count is affected by several factors:
- Are there multiple standards or varieties for this breed such as coat type, size, or color
- Is the breed recognized by different names in different kennel club organizations
- Does the breed name vary in different countries or regions within a country
- Are mixed breeds and designer breeds recognized as 'breeds'
This site will document as many breeds as possible. Breeds with multiple names will be listed in all appropriate alphabetic positions.
Click any letter at the top of this page to view the complete list of breeds that begin with that letter. And if the breed you're looking for is not listed please let me know but using the Submit a Breed form.
Many people recognize 'breeds' that are not recognized by the various kennnel clubs. These tend to be new varieties of dogs that have been created by mixing two or more breeds or by creating teacup or miniatures of a breed by breeding for size. Visit the Designer Breeds page to learn more about these varieties.
