General Description:
|
The AmbullNeo mastiff is a very large, muscular and powerful dog with a thick neck and wide shoulders. He also displays a very wide chest, broad head, strong, straight body and sturdy legs. The nose is quite wide with large nostrils and the powerful jaw contains very impressive strong, sharp teeth. Your first impression on viewing the thick boned and heavily muscled build is that of tremendous strength. Yet the Ambullneo Mastiff possesses both great agility and gracefulness for his size, weight and girth.
This breed also possesses attributes that are not obvious in its appearance. He has extraordinary hearing and great night vision. The Ambullneo is also very observant and aware of changes in his surroundings. Whether you rearrange the furniture or add something new to your home or property, he will notice. Yet this is not a dog that is given to incessant barking. If he barks you should investigate the cause. |

Breed Origin:

Breed Origin Courtesy of AmBullNeoMastiff.com
This 90’s version of the Bull and mastiff comes from a breeding program started in the early 80’s comprised of breeding an English Mastiff male to a Neapolitan female where two pups from this litter were then bred to a Game Bred Pit bull. These 50/50 crosses were bred to a Bull mastiff. The result was a 45% Bulldog, 55% Mastiff cross. An American Bulldog/Pit bull was bred to a Bull mastiff producing a 70% Bulldog, 30% Mastiff cross. This was bred to the 45% Bulldog, 55% Mastiff cross to produce a 57.5% Bulldog, 42.5% Mastiff cross.
The individual dogs used in the Ambullneo Mastiff breeding program were the best representatives of their breed that the breeder could afford. He spared no expense locating and procuring the finest Mastiffs, Bull Mastiffs and Bulldogs in the world. Dogs were imported from other country's to take part in this spectacular breeding program. The first two breeding's of Mastiffs produced 19 pups. After intelligence testing the top four females were kept. Later at eighteen months old these four dogs were x-rayed hips and elbows and only two of the females were used in the breeding program. The others spayed and placed. The APBT used was a well bred dog descending from some of the greatest CH dogs in the world. This breeding produced nine puppies or which only four, all females, were kept for the breeding program. These females were bred to an OFA excellent very athletic bull mastiff with large bones, keen eye site and a 34 inch head. The vet culled these pups very thoroughly leaving only the very best for the breeding program. Now while all this was going on an American bulldog pit bull cross had been bred to another Bull Mastiff unrelated to the first one in the breeding program. This produced a litter of eight 70/30 bulldog mastiff crosses and most of these young adults exhibited high intelligence and were also very athletic. The very best were bred together and produced the F1 progeny and the rest is history. The breeder, Mark Reasinger Ph.D, stated the following about how he chose the breed name: "When naming the breed I had three ways I could go. First I could name the breed after myself like Louis Doberman did when he created the Doberman Pincher. Or I could name the breed after the geographical location it came from like the English Mastiff that came from England or the Fila Brazilearo that comes from Brazil. Or I could use the proses Mosley used when he produced the Bull Mastiff. I chose the third method of naming the breed and went with Am-Bull-Neo Mastiff after the type of dogs used in the breeding program. The aim is for the American Bulldog and the American Pit Bull Terrier and to let everyone know this dog is American Made. Bull is for the larger percentage of Bulldog in the breed to include the bulldogs in the original Bull Mastiff. Neo is short for the Neapolitan Mastiff. The second word Mastiff is for the English Mastiff and the Mastiff in the two Bull Mastiffs used in the program and lets people know it's a large breed." |

Temperament and Personality:
|
The Ambullneo Mastiff is an intelligent, loyal, affectionate and gentle companion that is quite devoted to his family and friends. He is gentle with children and does very well with other pets if properly socialized at an early age. This dog may be unsure of strangers and has an unstoppable desire to guard and protect its family, especially children. The Ambullneo Mastiff must be well trained and handled by a person who is experienced with large dogs. It is imperative that this dog know that his owner is the pack leader. Though this is a very even tempered breed the instinct to protect is powerful. He has a tremendous desire to please his people, participate in a variety of activities and learn new things.

Exercise and Grooming:
|
The Ambullneo Mastiff can do quite well as either an inside dog or an outside dog. This is not a hyper breed but does require sufficient exercise to stay healthy and happy.
Pay attention to the feet and toenails of this breed. Assure that the nails are trimmed regularly and that nothing is trapped in the hair or between the pads on the feet. These dogs carry a great deal of weight so the feet should be protected from irritation or injury. The short, smooth coat requires minimal care. Regular brushing and an occasional bath are adequate. |

General Health:
|
All purebred dogs are more susceptible to certain health conditions while less susceptible to others. It does not mean that your dog will or will not suffer from these or other conditions.
The most common health problem associated with this relatively new breed is Hip Dysplasia which is common in many large breed dogs. |
|
Other Things You Should Know:
|
The Ambullneo Mastiff is very sensitive to tone of voice. While it is imperative that he know the owner is the pack leader, it is not necessary to treat or command this breed harshly. An experienced handler knows the difference between being firm and authoritative instead of harsh.
Given the agility of this dog a fence of at least 5 feet in height is required if the dog is to be loose in a yard or pen. Long, daily walks will serve this breed well in meeting both the need for socialization and exercise. |
