AKA's, Nicknames and Varieties
Nicknames are one thing, AKA's are another. Many breeds with which we are familiar are Also Known As (AKA) many other names. This can be for several reasons. Very often a single breed of dog will be known by different names in different countries or even in different regions of the same country.
Nicknames are a bit different. Nicknames tend to become popular when a particular breed is dubbed with a nickname that describes one or more characteristics of that breed. One of the most appropriate examples that comes to mind is the Affenpinscher which has been nicknamed 'Monkey Dog'. Take one look at the face of that breed and tell me the moniker isn't perfect.
Varieties within a breed are most frequently based on size, color or coat. For example smooth-coated versus wire-haired, etc. However for the purposes of this page I am not referring to varieties as recognized by the various kennel clubs.
I'm wlll continue to build the list below that tells you the primary breed name, any also known as names for that breed, nicknames and the varieties associated with that breed, if any. Remember not every breed will have known AKA's, nicknames or accepted varieties.
