There are well over 800 breeds of dogs that have been recognized by the various kennel clubs. This number does not include hybrids, cross breeds, mixed breeds, and designer breeds   It is, however, difficult to determine exactly how many unique breeds really exist.

The count is affected by several factors:
  • Are there multiple standards for this breed such as coat type, size, or color
  • Is the breed recognized by different names in different kennel club organizations
  • Does the breed name vary in different countries or regions
  • Are mixed breeds and designer breeds recognized as 'breeds'
This site will document as many breeds as possible.  Breeds with multiple names will be listed in all appropriate alphabetic positions.  If you are aware of a breed that is not included on this site or that is recognized by an alternate name that is not included on this site please complete the Submit A Breed form and I will add the information you provide.
