New York, NY, May 10, 2013 –NY Abandoned Angels Rescue (NYAAR), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of dogs in need of loving forever homes, will host its ten-year anniversary auction online from May 10th through the 22nd. “When Abandoned Angels began in 2003, I never imagined that we would save over 2,500 dogs’ lives,” said Dolores Rodrigues, founder of NYAAR. “We currently have over 50 dogs in our rescue’s care, many of whom are waiting for surgeries or specialized veterinary care, and we thought an online auction would be a great way to raise funds.”
NYAAR relies solely on donations to support its organization, whether through adoptions or the generosity of the public to help pay for the veterinary care of sick, physically disabled, and behaviorally challenged dogs. Items available in the online auction include everything from custom portraits of pets to jewelry, sports memorabilia and luxurious travel accommodations.

When a new dog comes to live at my house, they are rolled into our program on day one! It can be a puppy or an extended stay adult visitor. Let's face it, there is nothing else for them to eat here but natural foods.

Pet Food’s Downfall, The Dreaded Buzz Word
When looking back to the 1960’s and 1970’s, those that went to “health food stores” were weird, odd, crazy hippies. Over and over we heard, “it was just a weird fad this “organic” thing."
The keyword or buzz words then were “natural" or "organic”. We knew what we wanted to put in our bodies and we wanted it to be from natural, clean sources lacking chemicals or processing. We stayed focused and diligent sticking to our dogma! We knew local sourcing was best. Getting foods locally was more efficient and we wanted to see where our food was grown and how. Our “natural” dogma became inclusive of our pets, quickly.
The “Natural Pet Food Category” exploded in the 2000’s and became big moneymakers for the newer upstart “natural pet food companies”. “Natural” became the buzzword in dog and cat food, too. The years went by and the message was getting out to pet owners that their pets should eat better and they wanted better products for their pets! Veterinarians' offices were packed with pets with skin allergies, ear problems, shedding and more.
Now we are in 2013 and the dreaded buzz word is “natural pet food”. Imagine that! Money was being made with natural pet products! Big Pet Food wanted in because they started losing ground. Their grocery brands were safe however. The public at large was still buying their pet food when they were in the large grocery stores. Also, the public at large was still uneducated about the benefits of natural foods, but that has taken a hit now, too. The explosion of “natural or healthy” pet products in the big box stores and the grocery chains are evidence of that fact.
Big Pet Food won’t lose money! They found a way to use the buzz words needed to buy a product without spending the extra money it takes to use the proper ingredients. The ingredients are probably from China. That’s how they continue to make money. Misrepresenting the products and basically fooling the average pet owner.
The Moral Of The Story Is? Think local, ask questions. Where are the ingredients from that are in the product you want to buy? The manufacturers that are in this game to actually help your pets nutrition will tell you because they are proud of it! It’s that simple. This product is a great place to start once you make the decision to consider the ingredient sourcing. It can be delivered right to your door.

Did you lose your dog in the Bakersfield CA area UPDATE: As of Jan 30 this handsome little man has been named 'Blue Boy' and is in a safe foster home while the search for his owner continues. If his owner is not found the foster family has expressed an interest in keeping Blue Boy. This handsome Pit Bull was found sitting in the parking lot at the Stonecreek Junior High School on Akers Road in Bakersfield CA. He is approximately 50 pounds, is gray with light brown eyes, not chipped and not neutered. A kind hearted dog lover picked this fellow up so that he wouldn't be turned into the shelter. I am on the board of a rescue called Im-Paws-Able Rescue. Since it is so costly to pull urgent shelter dogs, we frequently post chip ins and ask for donations so we can continue saving lives. I hope you won't mind an email from me now and then that includes a plea for a particular dog. I will include a link to a Facebook post/page where there will be more information concerning the dog, if you can share it there that would help so much as well. If an occasional email is a problem, please let me know.
We are currently in the process of raising money for a boy named Shawnee. Shawnee was seized by BARCS, where he was adopted from, w/a broken femur & had to have a metal rod put in to stabilize the break. Impawsable pulled him & placed him in a screened foster home. Within 3 days, his hip was draining. Xrays showed the pin placement was incorrect, so an orthopedic surgeon appt was made. The following day, the pin punctured through the skin and he tried to chew it out. He required orthopedic surgery to put a bar on the outside of his leg & clean/repair the large hole he had chewed in his hip. He then needed surgery to remove the bar.
Shawnee needed PT that he was not receiving, nor was he made available. There were also other, serious concerns, so the rescue sent a written request for the return of the dog and appeared to pick him up. Fosters refused to release him, sending a cease & desist, instead. ImPawsAble finally convinced a judge to sign a warrant for his return. He is in very poor condition. We now have to begin his therapy from scratch. It will take nothing short of a miracle to make that leg functional again...but that's what we are shooting for!
Shawnee requires special food and water therapy that costs $20 a session, 3-4 sessions a week.

A Guest Blog submitted by Rick  It was the late 1950’s and my brother and I were off from school on Christmas vacation. My mom had come home from work, cooked one of her wonderful dinners, and then spent the evening baking sugar cookies. You know the kind. Figures of snowmen, reindeer and such. She put a little hole in the top of each one. She sprinkled them with red and green colored sugar and painstakingly secured a string through the hole in each cookie after they had cooled down from their heated adventure in the oven.
We had just put up the Christmas tree and mom took the time to hang the cookies in a distribution pattern that made each angle of the tree look like a calculated bakers delight. What a cool idea! Never saw that before. Maybe it was an old tradition that she never told us about. Anyway, there they hung in all their glory.
A few days later my brother and me, with mom and dad, hopped in the car, or should I say, made our way through the deep snow to the car, to visit the relatives. We came home, all tired out, and started to get ready for bed. Suddenly, just as my brother and I were about to go upstairs to our bedroom, my mom lets out a shriek!
What she discovered was a little miracle and a completely unexpected surprise. She told us all to take a look at the tree and we finally saw what she was pointing out. The cookies were all gone up to about four feet from the floor with only the strings left. It was a bit strange seeing those strings in their nakedness. Who could have done this? I don't think we had an invasion of hungry elves hit the neighborhood. Of course mom and dad suspected my brother and me, but we declared our innocence, since the cookies were on the tree when we left the house. Hmm, who could be so cunning?! Then it dawned on us.
| Our female German Short-haired Pointer, Lady, had somehow eaten all the cookies on the tree that she could reach by probably getting up on her hind legs. How she managed to eat those cookies, leave every string and not push the tree over or even knock off one ornament or piece of tinsel will always be a mystery. If only we had video cameras back then. We kept imagining what Lady must have looked like, nibbling away at each cookie. How long did it take her to eat all those cookies so delicately? Don’t try this at home! You might find a fallen Christmas tree when you turn on the lights after a joyous holiday jaunt.
You see, my dad had trained Lady very well as a hunting dog and she was very obedient. She must have known that it was forbidden to break anything, but those cookies, those dangling sugar coated snowman and reindeer cookies, with no one at home, were just too much for dad’s prize winning hunting dog. Please don’t tempt your dog with holiday treats. You might be surprised at how smart, tactful and agile your dog can be when it comes to your treasured seasonal goodies!

What a great and versatile product. The web site Tulane's Closet bills this product as “An affordable new alternative to the old fashioned e-collar.” But in truth it’s so much more.
We’ve all been through it. Your pet’s had recent surgery, or any injury, or a skin irritation, and they just keep licking it. So you put them in an e-collar, aka: ‘The Cone of Shame.’ No pet has ever been happy or comfortable when forced to wear the e-collar. And if it’s big enough to do the job, stop them from licking themselves, than it’s also big enough to be a real nuisance. The poor dog, or cat, bangs into walls, furniture, cabinets and your legs! Have you ever seen a dog try to go through the doggie door with an e-collar on? I have – not a pretty site.  So along comes the Onesie by Tui from Tulane’s Closet. The theory behind this garment is that if your pet has an area on their body that they must avoid licking, chewing or biting the Onesie will cover it up so they can’t further irritate it.
In terms of the quality of this garment I can only compare it to a garment you’d purchase for your newborn in a high end baby boutique! It’s an extremely soft, washable, and breathable cotton garment. The built in “potty cover” is made with extra thick and absorbent terry cloth. And it folds or rolls away from the covered area and easily snaps out of the way so that your pet can potty easily without you having to remove the entire garment.
I recently had occasion to use this garment on my 5 year old Boston Terrier, Rocky, pictured above. He has very sensitive skin that is easily irritated. Unfortunately once an irritation occurs he makes it worse by licking and chewing at the affected area. So the Onesie seemed the perfect solution – I was so tired of the e-collar. The Tulane’s Closet website includes a sizing chart. And I realized immediately that Rocky would fall between sizes. So I tried both the small and the medium. The small was a bit small and the medium was a bit loose. But not so loose that he couldn’t walk around in it. And you could just tell that he didn’t mind having it on. He sniffed it a bit and then went about his business. Playing, eating and sleeping! But NOT licking or biting himself and NOT trying to escape the Onesie like he tries to escape the e-collar. So from that perspective alone it was a great success. In fact, I think big brother Curtis was a little jealous that he didn't have one too! I laundered the Onesie just to see how it held up. It washed beautifully. Had it been a perfect fit I would have hung it up to dry. But since it was a bit loose on him I threw it in the dryer. After all, it’s a cotton garment so I assumed it would shrink. The question was how much would it shrink! I’m going to assume that they’re using a pre-shrunk cotton material since it only shrunk a very small amount. In my case this worked out perfectly – now the garment really fits Rocky. But, just as importantly, after washing and drying it the Onesie held its shape perfectly, the terry cloth did not shed or become lumpy and linty, and the garment still appeared brand new after laundering.
Now why did I start out by saying this garment is so much more than an alternative to the e-collar. Well, as many of you know my dogs and I recently moved from Nevada to upstate New York. It’s mid-October and we’ve already experienced temps in the teens! My dogs are not happy about this. And Rocky, in particular, hates the cold. Even in Nevada he’d start shivering when temps hit the 50’s. I’ve never been one for dressing my dogs. But, it is very damp and chilly in this area and Rocky was always shivering or looking for a blanket to crawl under. So I started putting the Onesie on him in the morning and just leaving it on him until the day warmed up a bit. After all, it’s breathable cotton. And he really seems to be thrilled to have it on keeping him a bit warmer. He actually gets excited when he sees me bringing it toward him. Now that’s a rave!
Please remember that this garment cannot be effective for all areas. For example if your pet has an irritation or injury around the eyes, on the head or ears, or anywhere else that they can scratch with their feet the old fashion e-collar would still offer the most protection and be the safest approach.
But the bottom line on this product is that I strongly recommend it for those who need it for the purpose it was intended – to replace an e-collar. But, it’s so well made and reasonably priced I also recommend it for those of you that have pets that are affected by cooler temps. It’s so convenient to slip on and off and has the built-in, snap-back potty cover so it makes a great little snuggle garment for your chilly pet, indoors or out!
