Merlin (aka Pom-Pom) is a Toy Poodle that really wants a forever home and a person to love. He is approximately 5 years old and this little fur ball weighs only about five pounds. But it's five pounds of pure love. I've had him in my home as a foster companion for 2 days now. But here's what I can already tell you about him.
1 Comment The Yorkshire Terrier03/30/2011 What do you know about the Yorkshire Terrier? If you'd like to learn more it is this week's Breed of the Week on All Dogs Welcome. Did you know that the breed was originally named the 'Broken-haired Scotch Terrier'. I'm glad they changed it. What is broken-haired anyway? And did you also know that the Yorkshire Terrier is known by five other names:
The two dogs pictured above are Spike Jones (left) and Jack. Both American Staffordshire Terriers - members of the notorious 'bully breeds'. Spike belonged to my brother and passed away at the age of 14. He was the same age as my son and they basically grew up together. Jack belongs to my parents, is now about 13 years old, and lives with two Shih Tzus. On March 21, 2011 I happened to post the American Pit Bull Terrier as the Breed of the Week on this site. You can still read about this magnificent breed on the APBT breed page. In that post I mention that a recent study indicated that bully breeds were getting high scores in comparison to the general dog population on temperament tests. The average domestic dog breed scores about 77% on these tests. The various and so-called 'bully breeds' are averaging scores between 83% - 86%. It is this bloggers opinion that this proves what bully breed advocates have said about these dogs all along. It isn't the dogs! The reputation of pit bulls is based on a cruel and inhumane 'sport' during which the dogs are effectively fighting for their lives. Think about this. They don't know they are 'entertaining' groups of ignorant humans. They are in there fighting for their lives. Doesn't that lead you to believe that any breed of dogs that had been forced into this activity would have fought as hard and could have developed this reputation. Unfortunately the attributes that make them beautiful, their size, build, strength and agility, add credence to their reputation. The pit bulls strength is obvious even at just a glance making it possible for people to believe they could attack and never let go. Further enhancing this reputation is the fact that only the horror stories involving pit bulls seem to get any media attention. But there are so many more stories of pit bulls that are so loyal to their families that they have endangered or even sacrificed their own lives to save one or more family members. American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs), American Staffordshire Terriers (AmStaffs), Pit Bulls and Bull Terriers are in fact more intelligent, affectionate, compassionate and gentle than the ignorant humans who would have anything to do with the so-called and illegal sport of pit fights. Site Updates03/22/2011 Have you seen this week's Breed of the Week. It's the Aberdeen Terrier. Actually, Aberdeen Terrier is the age old name for the Scottish Terrier. Read more about it on the Breed of the Week page on this site. If you just like to look at cute dogs check out the Aberdeen/Scottish Terrier Designer Breeds. Still working to build the lists of rescues and shelters. As I mentioned I will add some each day. Today a added breed specific rescues for both the Boxer and the Affenpinscher. Check out the Breed Specific Rescues list on this site. And don't forget - your input is always appreciated so if you are involved with a rescue please complete the Submit a Rescue form so I can post the information. We need to help all of the rescues out there get found, get donations, get volunteers and match up with adoptive families. In the mood for a heart warming story. Read "No Charge For Love." It's about a little boy and why he chooses the puppy that isn't as active and capable as the others in its litter. And as always check out the Daily Dog Quote. What's New Today03/20/2011 Finally - I have finished posting the list and pix of all the Poodle Designer Breeds. Turned out there are 71 documented designer breeds that incorporate Poodle stock as a primary breed in the mix. So now I'm working on the breed pages for all three varieties of Poodles, the Standard, Toy and Miniature. You might recall I was a bit surprised when I realized that the Pug is recognized by a total of 8 different names internationally. Well, the three varieties of Poodles are known by a total of 17 different names! But you can learn all of those when I post the Poodle breed pages - soon. I also posted a sweet poem about a Lost Little Puppy. Don't worry - it has a happy ending. And of course don't forget the Daily Dog Quote. If you haven't been following from the beginning scroll down the Daily Dog Quote page and read a few. Sometimes they're funny, other times enlightening or thought provoking. Still working tediously to document all those Poodle designer breeds. Another day or two and they'll be here! In the meantime I've made some other additions to the site. I've added links to quite a few breed specific rescues for Scottish Terriers, Pugs and Poodles. Still a long way to go to post as many rescues as possible but I'm going to start adding a few each day. This is actually a task that will never be completed because, fortunately, there are always more people and organizations getting involved with the rescue effort. Don't forget, if you are involved with a rescue, or if you know of one, please complete the Submit a Rescue form on this site or email me and I'll post the information as soon as I can verify it. I've added a new page on the Breeds tab. It's called AKA's, Nicknames and Varieties. Also Known As names (AKA's) are different then nicknames. These are alternate names the breed is still known by in other countries, or, in some cases, on a regional level. And even though I specify this information on the breed pages I thought it would be interesting to summarize it in a way that's easier for people to look up at a glance. I also renamed the page that had been called Designer and Mixed Breeds to Designer Breeds. Why? Two reasons actually. First of all I haven't yet included any mixed breeds. And second, if you read my blog of February 20th, entitled "Designer Breed, Mixed Breed or Mutt - What's the Difference," I have concluded that there is a difference between the three. So while I may choose to add information about mixed breeds at a later date they just don't belong on this page. And as always don't forget to check the Daily Dog Quote. Latest Site Updates03/16/2011 Well, what's new today is that I'm working very hard to publish information about all three varieties of poodles and the Poodle Designer Breeds. Did you know that there are nearly 70 designer breeds that have incorporated one of the three varieties of poodles. It's mind boggling. So I'm busy hunting down pix and info on all of these and hope to be able to publish these pages this week. In the meantime I've posted some pix that represent the true meaning of Puppy Love! I'm sure you'll enjoy these as much as I enjoyed finding them and posting them. Oh - and there's always the Daily Dog Quote. Check back soon to see about all those poodles. Latest Site Updates03/14/2011 It's Monday evening here on the east coast so it's time to post the newest Breed of the Week. This week I've chosen the American Pit Bull Terrier since I've been blogging and tweeting about them all week. The APBT is one of the 'bully breeds' that needs our help to fix their undeserved and man-made reputation. We need to find responsible homes and families for these great dogs and we need to make the term 'pit fight' leave out vocabularies forever. On the lighter side, if you didn't have a chance to do so yesterday have a look at the Seven Dwarf Puppies - just for fun. I found it amusing to be able to find pix of one puppy for each of the seven dwarfs' names. And of course the Daily Dog Quote has been updated - like it is every day! Latest Site Updates03/13/2011 I was flipping through a bunch of puppy pictures when I thought "Oh - what a SLEEPY little guy." And I kept flipping. And then I saw one that made me think "Wow - he looks GRUMPY." And I kept flipping. Until I saw one that made me say "What a HAPPY dog." And I kept flipping. Should I go on or are you catching my drift. See the Seven Dwarf Puppies - just for fun - on this site. Have you seen the beautiful American Pit Bull Terrier pups on my YouTube channel. These puppies will grow to be magnificent dogs. Lets hope they all end up in good bully-loving homes . Don't forget to check the Daily Dog Quote - DAILY! Latest Site Updates03/12/2011 Want to check out some of the newest additions to this site. Well here they are:
